Liz Truss has leapt to the top of the market in the race to replace Johnson as Tory leader, now standing at a 14 per cent chance.
Johnson told Tory MPs that the Archbishop of Canterbury had been more critical of his Rwanda plan than the war in Ukraine.
The prime minister's use of the Ukraine tragedy in his Partygate apology marked a "new low", critics said.
"You apologise if you spill ice-cream. If you mislead parliament you resign," the former MP said in an interview with Andrew Marr.
His brief comments formed part of a longer Commons statement, which also covered the war in Ukraine.
The actor discussed the 'myth of omnipotence' and how it leads to some people being sent to prison and some being elected prime minister.
Jeremy Corbyn also posted on Facebook that while Boris claims he is sorry, the reality is that he was caught out.
"Andrea Leadsom just used the deaths of children who drowned in the Channel as justification for her party's hateful and inhuman trafficking deal with Rwanda. She is beyond cruel. Just like the plan."
