Boris Johnson has raised doubts over whether England will participate in the 2018 World Cup after a former Russian spy was exposed to an unknown substance in Salisbury.

The Foreign Secretary said we need to have a “serious conversation about our engagement with Russia”, which could include whether the UK sends representation to the tournament this summer.

Sergei Skripal – a 66-year-old former military official from Russia who was convicted of spying for the UK – and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia were found in a critical state on Sunday after being exposed to an unknown substance.

British counter-terrorism police are investigating the case, and Alexander Litvinenko’s lawyer has called for a public inquiry into suspected poisoning.

Russia is set to host the 2018 World Cup this summer, with England due to face Tunisia on 18th June in Volgograd.

The Foreign Secretary’s remarks over UK representation at the tournament were later clarified as referring to British ‘officials and dignitaries’, and not the football team.
